Students are also working on balancing equations such as 4+3=7+0 and identifying that 2+5=6-1 is not true. We are working on identifying different ways to make the statement true. Please work on addition and subtraction fluency at home-- it really helps students with their mental math and being able to recognize patterns and relationships in numbers. 2.1 Math: We are beginning unit 3 this week. We will learn how to measure and estimate lengths in standard units. Students will measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes. We will practice estimating the length of an object and measure to determine how much longer one object is than another, expressing the length difference in terms of a standard length unit. Relate addition and Reading: We are working on Unit 3: Reading about the World-- This is a unit where we are diving into nonfiction texts about many different topic like endangered plants and animals, important figures and ways recycle. This week we are practicing taking a sneak peak with a new nonfiction book, reading using a smooth and lively voice, chatting about the text and pictures with a partner and strategies for finding key words. If students have any nonfiction books at home that they would like to share with our library they are welcome to bring them. We will take good care of them and make sure they are returned. Writing: This week students are learning how to add details in their nonfiction books with pictures, labels, comparisons and speech bubbles. We will talk about the commutative property of addition (A+B=C, so B+A=C) and how the biggest number always needs to come first in a subtraction equation. We will also discuss addition and subtraction strategies and sums of ten to help notice patterns. 2.1 Math: This week students are continuing to practice adding and subtracting within 100. We are practicing using many strategies to build confidence in number sense. We will begin to apply addition and subtraction strategies to solve one and two step word problems. Reading: This week students are working in Unit 2: Word Detectives. Students are learning how to pay special attention to the beginning of words, watch out for different ending sounds, learn strategies to help solve vowel mysteries, and use word parts they know to help them solve unusual words. Writing: This week students are working on Unit 2: Informational Writing- How To Books. Students are learning how to organize their information into sections or chapters. Students will practice adding lots of details to their books and taking small steps to guide their audience on their topic. This week we are working on adding transition words such as first, then, so, next and last to help sequence the steps.
